Falling From Grace
The Eagles continued their losing ways on Sunday in Cleveland against the Browns. The Browns beat the lifeless Eagles 22-17 in a sleeper of a game played in a driving rain. The Eagles on their openinning drive marched the ball down the field 71 yards on ten plays, 9 rushes 1 pass play, consuming 5:54 off the clock only to have Mikes Sanders fumble the ball on the Browns 4 yardline. It looked like Eagles Head coach Doug Pederson finally got the memo to run the ball especially playing in the rain but after the fumble occurred, the Eagles lost their mojo. After racking up 96 yards on 19 rushing attempts in the first half only accumulated 10 yards rushing on six attempts in the second half. I don't get it. They were only down by 7 points to a Browns team that aren't that explosive with their passing game. So why get away from what was working? Why put Eagles QB Carson Wentz in a position where he has to make all the plays knowing that he isn't having his best season. True to form, Carson Wentz through a crucial interception to the Browns backup LB Sione Takitaki who returned it for a TD. Wentz had a awful day behind center, he was 21 of 35 for 235 yards and two interceptions to bring his season total to 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His QB rating is the 3rd worst in the league at 73.3 %. The Browns QB Baker Mayfield wasn't much better , going 12 of 22 for 204 yards but he didn't turn the ball over. Wentz continues to kill the Eagles with his propensity to turn the ball over. That is the difference this year for the birds. They are not winning the turnover battle. The Eagles Defense played well only giving up 13 points to an offense with one of the best running back tandems in the league. The Eagles surrendered 135 yards on the ground. Nick Chubb had 114 yards rushing on 20 carries but kept Kareem Hunt to 11 yards on 13 attempts. The Eagles defensive secondary doesn't have that lock down defender and when Browns QB Baker Mayfield needed a big play, the Eagles secondary couldn't make the stop. Avonte Maddox and Jalen Mills looked silly on several plays and are not getting that big Int or stop when the Eagles need it the most.
After the game the questions started to fly and speculation grows as to whether Head Coach Doug Pederson is going to make a change at quarterback. During his postgame press conference, head coach Doug Pederson was asked several ways if a change was coming. Would he be willing to make a change at QB and put backup QB Jalen Hurts in. Doug Pederson emphatically said no. " It would be a bad message" to send to everyone that he has given up on this season if he were to make a change. " Wentz is our guy"!!!!
At 3-6-1 the Eagles cling onto first place in the NFC east. Coach Pederson needs to do something different to try to get his team to play better. Next up for the Birds is the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night football. Pederson's play calling is horrible, there is no continuity, there is no flow, no excitement. There isn't much to get fired up about and if things don't change soon, the Eagles and Doug Pederson will feel the wrath of the fans !!!! My have they fallen from grace!!!!
