In the last 10 days, the Flyers made some massive moves to upgrade their team. Philadelphia made their first move on Saturday and acquired Nashville’s defenseman, Ryan Ellis. Ryan Ellis is an all-around player who will mightily help Philly’s struggling defense. The following day, the Arizona Coyotes acquired a 2022 second-round pick, 7th round pick and defenseman Shayne Gostisbere from Philadelphia because of cap reasons. Some may think Philadelphia made a questionable trade to Arizona but that freed up space to acquire Buffalo’s defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen for Robert Hagg and the 13th overall pick in Friday night's draft. Sunday afternoon, Philadelphia traded their longtime winger Jakub Voráček back to Columbus for forward Cam Atkinson. Flyers General Manager, Chuck Fletcher addressed the defense in just 7 days.
Did these Moves Put the Flyers in a Good Spot?
First Trade: Nashville’s defenseman, Ryan Ellis did not have a strong 2020-2021 season but in the 2019-2020 season, he had 8 goals, 30 assists, and 38 points. Ryan Ellis will pair with Ivan Provorov on the first line.
1). Creates space to score
2). Protects the goaltender
3). Physical defenseman
Second Trade: Buffalo’s defenseman, Rasmus Ristolainen also did not have his best season but during the 2019-2020 season, he had 6 goals, 27 assists, and 33 points. Rasmus will be on the second line with Cam York or Travis Sanheim.
1). Creative puck skills
2). Strong puck control
3). Bullies opponents
4). Stands up for himself and his teammates
Columbus Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson put up 15 goals,19 assists, and 34 points in the 2020-2021 season. The Flyers will likely pair him with Claude Giroux on the second line.
1). Reliable scorer
2). Unique puck skills
3). Good hockey IQ
The Flyers organization did a fantastic job acquiring three former alternate captains who can potentially lead this club to victory. Philadelphia fulfilled 2 areas they were lacking last season, defense and scoring.
