Philadelphia announced on August 2nd, they are filing an arbitration case towards defenseman Travis Sanheim. This could mean Travis might’ve asked for more money thus putting Philadelphia in a tough spot. In my opinion, Philadelphia might not be giving that much to Travis Sanheim because of the cap room, and the weaknesses he showed on the ice last season.
Why Philadelphia might not Give Sanheim a Big Contract
The Flyers this offseason were struggling with the cap. Before the Flyers made any moves they were 15 million over the cap. After Chuck Fletcher’s busy offseason they are currently at 73 million under the cap. Philadelphia acquired Ryan Ellis from Nashville which requires the Flyers to eat up six million of his contract for the next 6 years. The Flyers will be at 79 million which will be a huge problem. Travis Sanheim may be asking for money but the Flyers don’t have that kind of money to give away because of how close they will be to the cap. Other reasons Travis shouldn’t earn the money were his fundamental mistakes last year and his offense was his second-worst of his career in 2021. If Philadelphia and Travis agree on a contract, three million is the right amount for the 3rd and 4th line D-man.
