What a dreadful night to be a Philadelphia sports fan!! The Phillies were eliminated three games to one by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. The Eagles dropped their second game in a row on Thursday Night Football to the New York Giants 34-17. The Flyers started the Rick Tocchet coaching era by losing to the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers 2-1. Please wake me up from this bad dream!!
The Phillies, with the fourth-highest payroll in Major League Baseball were eliminated by the reigning World Series Champions, but had several opportunities to win the series. It’s the fourth year in a row that the Phillies have underachieved in the playoffs.
The Birds also underachieved in front of a National audience. They looked bad on defense (without two of their best players: Jalen Carter and Quinyon Mitchell were injured) by giving up 34 points, and their offense couldn’t produce any points in the second half. While their run/pass ratio was too pass-heavy, running back Saquon Barkley was held to just 58 yards on the ground. The Eagles have some sole searching to do as they get a mini bye before they head to Minneapolis to face the Vikings on Sunday October 19th with kickoff at 1pm.
The Flyers opened their season with a loss, but they played well against the Panthers. With the Eagles and Phillies in action, the Flyers loss is just a footnote to a terrible night to be a Philly Sports Fan. We will cover it all this weekend in The Locker Room with Billy Schweim.
